RESULTS – 2018 NJ STATE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SOUTH

The 2018 NJ State Individual Championship adopted a new format this year.   For the first time, the tournament was held in two locations, in South Jersey and North Jersey.   The tournament featured three sections for each region; grades K-8 , grades 9-12, and Girls.   The winners of each section for South and North will meet in a playoff on June 10 at Chess Kings and Queens Academy in Piscataway NJ for the right to be the NJ representative at national events.
  •  NJ 9-12 champion will represent the state at the Denker Tournament of HS Champions.
  • NJ K-8 champion will represent the state at the Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions.
  • NJ Girls champion will represent the state at the National Girls Tournament of Champions.
The South Jersey tournament was at the South Jersey Innovation Center in Marlton on Sunday May 20 and hosted 40 players and their parents.
The Girls tournament was won by WFM Sanjana Vittal with a perfect score of 4/4 followed by Rowan Field and Diana Suralik.   In the 9-12 grades section, Shawn Wang and Vikas Rama shared first with 3.5/4 followed by Anh Hoang Nhat Pham from Vietnam.  Vikas Rama is going to represent the south in the State playoffs.  The K-8 section was the most exciting featuring several dramatic games and upsets.  Tejas Rama and Bowen Liu shared first with a perfect score 4/4 followed by Boyang Zhao, Erick Wu, Noah Xu and Keiji Imai and Yeming Chen with ¾.   Vikas Rama prevailed In a dramatic 2 games tie-brake match to win the section and represent the South in the NJ state playoffs.
