2026 NJ Senior Championship
and Harrogate Senior Open
Tournament Report
Written by Nicholas Carlson

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, senior chess took center stage in Lakewood as the 2026 New Jersey Senior Championship and the Harrogate Senior Open were held together at Harrogate Village. The event brought together both experienced competitors and newer players for a full day of chess, community, and friendly competition. Players, staff, and visitors were also treated to a free lunch courtesy of our friends at Harrogate Village.

A total of 25 players competed between the two tournaments, with 14 players in the 2026 New Jersey Senior Championship and 11 players in the Harrogate Senior Open.

The 2026 New Jersey Senior Championship was held as a USCF-rated event for players age 50 and over. The tournament served not only as a state championship, but also as the qualifier for the top New Jersey resident to represent the state at the 2026 Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions.

Running alongside the state championship was the Harrogate Senior Open, a special event for players age 60 and over. The event was originally planned to include both a USCF-rated section and an unrated section, giving players of different experience levels the opportunity to participate. While the unrated section unfortunately did not receive any sign-ups, the rated section moved forward and gave 11 senior players a serious but welcoming tournament environment.

The event was organized through a partnership between the New Jersey State Chess Federation, the Toms River Chess Club, Harrogate Village, and New Jersey Life Master Eugene Salomon, who served as the main organizer for both events. At 97 and a half years old, Eugene’s continued involvement in New Jersey chess made the day especially meaningful. While it has not been officially confirmed, Eugene is likely the oldest person ever to organize a chess tournament in the United States, if not the world. His presence helped connect generations of chess players and highlighted the lifelong value of the game.

Tournament direction was led by Nick Carlson, Chief Tournament Director for the 2026 New Jersey Senior Championship, and John Bartlett, Chief Tournament Director for the Harrogate Senior Open. Tony Santiago-Axalco served as Assistant Chief Tournament Director for both events. Additional support came from Giovanni Fevola and Matthew Iacoviello, who helped with the early setup, and Erik Stroin, who assisted with setup and also took professional photos for the ACN and the NJSCF website.

That support made a major difference. Thanks to the work of the tournament directors, organizers, volunteers, and helpers, the event ran extremely smoothly, with all rounds starting on time.

Players competed throughout the day across multiple rounds, with trophies awarded in both the New Jersey Senior Championship and the rated section of the Harrogate Senior Open.
